Watsonville Brillante is the 12,500 square foot project that took 5 years to complete. Kathleen started the non-profit organization Community Arts & Empowerment to fund the project and to create the Muzzio Mosaic Arts Center where Kathleen teaches and mentors the youth of the community in the art of mosaics.
En el Cielo, is the second of four anchor images translated into mosaics from woodblock prints by the artist Juan Fuentes. This section took six moths to complete and was installed by Kathleen and a crew from Rinaldi Tile and Marble.
Here is a quote about this image from Juan Fuentes:
En el Cielo, (In the Sky) began as a linocut. I created this image during my artist residency at the Blue Mountain Center in upstate New York. My friend Francisco Dominguez sent me some photographs in collaboration. Growing up in Watsonville our family had spent times picking apples near Corralitos. En el Cielo represents someone reaching for the world. It could be anyone striving to be the best. It also shows how difficult the work is to be on a ladder in the sky in a delicate balance.
